Youth engagement in Labour and Peace Processes Forum
by Morris Andati
On 3–4 June 2026, the Kwale Youth Forum on Labour, Peace Processes, and Youth Policy Dialogue brought together 23 participants in Ukunda, Kwale County, for a two-day structured engagement convened by SDGs Kenya Forum, CRISP Africa, and the Embassy of Ireland Kenya under the African United Nations Youth Delegate Program (AUNYD) national implementation framework. The forum was the third county-level engagement in a national series following dialogues in Nairobi and Uasin Gishu, and the first to centre Kwale's distinct context — the intersection of coastal youth unemployment, blue economy potential, security risk, and limited access to governance structures. Participants included youth leaders, civil society representatives, county stakeholders, and community actors who engaged six national and international policy frameworks: the Youth Bill 2024, the Kenya National AI Strategy 2025–2030, ILO Recommendation 205, UN Security Council Resolution 2250, the Pact for the Future, and the National Peacebuilding Policy. Three priority areas emerged from the discussions. Participants called for deliberate investment in Kwale's blue economy and agricultural sector, with specific attention to fisheries cooperatives and the macadamia value chain. They pushed for a streamlined county-level support system for youth-led enterprises, covering SME registration, affordable licensing, financial parks, and county-backed financial models. They also recommended the development of a Kwale County Youth Policy and the localisation of the Public Participation Act and the Access to Information Act at county level. Recommendations were organised under three thematic working groups, Youth, Peace and Security; Economic and Digital Inclusion; and Governance and Civic Participation, which will continue the policy conversations and feed outputs into Kenya's national youth policy process, AUNYD's advocacy at UNGA, and Kenya's SDG and ECOSOC reporting.
Uasin Gishu County Youth Policy Forum: Youth-Led Political Integrity and Electoral Accountability
by Morris Andati
The “Strengthening Youth Leadership and Policy Advocacy in Kenya” project, convened by the African United Nations Youth Delegate (AUNYD) Programme and SDGs Kenya Forum, held a two-day Uasin Gishu County Youth Policy Forum in Eldoret (25–26 February 2026) to equip 24 youth participants—alongside county officials and local administrators—with the skills to translate national and global policy frameworks (including Kenya’s Constitution Chapter Six, the Youth Bill 2024, UNSCR 2250, and the Pact for the Future) into actionable, county-level recommendations on political integrity, governance participation, and peacebuilding. Through structured working groups, policy literacy sessions, and plenary validations, attendees produced a clause-numbered recommendation matrix with clear duty bearers, timelines, and follow-up mechanisms; key outcomes included a proposed County Youth Action Plan, commitments to nominate youth to County Peace Committees and Policing Authorities, a draft Peace Accord to counter political intolerance and organized youth violence, a memo on youth enterprise subsidy mechanisms and Youth Fund integrity controls, and strengthened data protection practices for civic monitoring. The forum’s immediate impact was a validated, implementation-ready roadmap anchored in county systems and national policy cycles, with concrete follow-up actions such as quarterly public tracking of youth participation resolutions, a hybrid accountability toolkit session scheduled for March/April 2026, and agreement from county leadership to explore tax waivers, operationalize Alternative Justice Systems at ward level, and integrate youth voices into budget and planning processes.
